Among the many resources available, the one I’ve found most valuable is risk tolerance.
My own leaps of faith range from moving to unfamiliar countries and cities, to trusting
business partners, to saying yes to projects that I hadn’t done before. Rolling the dice
hasn’t always panned out, but I’ve always ended up being glad I risked. Travelogue is a
text about going on such an adventure. Every piece of highly sensible safety equipment
promises protection, but to actually put it to use we have to go on the jungle treks, fall in
the river rapids, crawl through the caves, and leap from the plane trusting that our
parachutes will emerge from the packs and catch us. Only after taking the leap can the
bird’s eye view be enjoyed at its fullest.
In this piece, there’s a fluid sense of tonal center that encourages leaving one’s nest, piano
rhythms that exist out of tempo as though truly any possibility is valid, and a matter-of-
fact-ness in the text treatment that is optimistic and accepting more than saccharine; less
nostalgic than dreamy. May you perform this piece with a measured recklessness, a wild
abandon, and a trusting leap!
